Reading List by Amazon on LinkedIn Gone?

I used to use the Application “Reading List by Amazon” on LinkedIn for many years. Whenever I read a book, I went to LinkedIn and listed the book’s title on the Amazon Reading List, including a review about the same. But today, I do not find Amazon Reading List App at all on LinkedIn!

A Q&A search tells that LinkedIn has stopped supporting this App. And perhaps it did not warn users before stopping it. It feels bad to see our years of efforts go in vein, in this manner.

Read about it here:

After many years of using it, I had listed around 250 books that I had read and also had several "followers" who were following my profile for my reading interests. Though I kept posting larger reviews on my blogger.com blog also, but I had many books in my Reading List for which I had not got time to write reviews. Alas, all is gone now.

I still hope LinkedIn would start supporting the Reading List app and would also retrieve all our data/details which we entered in the app.

I was very, very upset with LinkedIn deleting Reading list by Amazon and told them so. More folks should complain. LI encouraged us to develop content, we did, they purposely destroyed it without any warning. I am a paying LinkedIn subscriber.

There are people who still read books. Reading list was a great way to "connect" with someone over common reading interests. I am flabbergasted by LinkedIn's action and treatment of paying customers.

I very much agree with you on everything here. This was the idea why I posted about it on my blog too. It was really bad that they stopped supporting and even did not give us prior notification about it.

I am also surprised that they stopped it even for paid members. It seems they have some commercial conflict with Amazon.com

Thanks for posting about this - I too have used this app regularly to keep track of books I've read and now all that history is gone. Very disappointing that they wouldn't give me a heads up in advance, but hey, I'm a free user of LinkedIn so I guess I can't complain all that much.

As an aside, I recently started using the app GoodReads and find it's much more in depth than the Amazon app.

Thanks for sharing. Did you ever manage to get your data back? So far I have had no luck and I did not keep any backups!!

Thanks a lot for your comment...

I have not got the app or the data back... Even I had not kept a copy of the data...

I checked out GoodReads and it seems good. It is also free. But now I am not feeling encouraged to start it once again. Fortunately I had posted reviews of all books I read in the recent years on my this blog also. If I take their membership and build a new network there, it will take time and energy - too much investment!

So I plan to continue writing small reviews on my blog only. I have backup of all my posts too, in case blogger.com also becomes paid service some day. But I did not have list of all the books I listed there on linkedin app, for which I had not got time to write reviews.

I've emailed Amazon (readinglist-feedback@amazon.com) in late December 2012 and they replied a few days later:

Thank you for using the Reading List application by Amazon. LinkedIn has recently discontinued their application program, including the Amazon Reading List. Unfortunately, this means that the application is no longer available on your home page or profile.

We wanted to let you know that your Reading List information has been preserved. We are working to make your information available and will be contacting you soon with more details.

I'm happy if I get the data back to 'import' it into GoodReads and/or my Google Books 'My library'

Wow! This is really a great news and there is hope!

Thanks a lot for sharing this with me and my readers here. Even I used to post book reviews and list some books on Google books. I shall wait for any further communication from them on this. Thanks again for your comment.

Here's the reply from Amazon:

Greetings!

Thank you for using Reading List by Amazon and for your patience as we’ve worked to make your book information available after LinkedIn deprecated their application program. Your Reading List information has been preserved and is available for import on Shelfari.com. Shelfari is an Amazon-owned site that helps you keep track of the books you’ve read and are reading, discover new books and interact with other readers.

Go to http://www.shelfari.com/addbooks. You can sign in to Shelfari using your Amazon account (or your existing Shelfari account). If you’re already a member, click “Import Books” from the Your Shelf drop-down on the home page. Click the “Import Books” from the Your Shelf drop down or go directly to: http://www.shelfari.com/addbooks and you will be guided through importing your books and reviews to your Shelfari bookshelf.

Visit the Shelfari FAQ to learn more: http://www.shelfari.com/help/question117
