Facebook Celebrities and Poor Policemen

Recently we had a case where a guy posted a picture on Facebook about a Traffic Constable in Gurgaon not wearing helmet. Here it goes:

We clicked a picture of this guy driving without helmet and then seeing this he stopped us.After stopping us he came directly inside the car and started threatening us that either u delete the photo or i will impound your car and will take you to the police station and will beat u up like anything.

On resisting to his threats he called his superior and he threatened us with the same.

I would like to ask the officials that are these the sort of people that we are relying on to do our security.

The people who threaten the normal public are the ones employed by our govt to do our security. WOW WHAT A WORLD WE LIVE IN...

Since it was posted on the official page of Gurgaon Traffic Police, it caught media fancy and the police even took action against the constable. This news piece in Navbharat Times says that the constable was transferred from Traffic staff to Gurgaon Police Line:

First of all I think we should understand that "law" is not the same for all. Delhi Government last year exempted Sikhs from wearing helmets:

The article says: 

"Wearing a helmet is optional in a few states in India, like Haryana and Punjab, where the Sikh community is in majority. Sikh women are not allowed to wear anything on their head apart from a turban, scarf or under-turban, hence making it optional for women to decide whether they want to wear a helmet or not."

So the funny thing is that our so called law changes according to your and my religion! We know that even turbans can't protect whole part of skull; and women will simply get killed because they don't even have a turban. But governments have to give extensions for vote banks on religious grounds. So a lot of people don't take such laws seriously. Ideally law should be same for all citizens.

I have never seen any policeman wearing a helmet on the road in most cities. It is like making that particular guy a scapegoat. And when I read details of this case, who complained? The guy was caught violating some traffic rule and then he saw this guy Dinesh passing by and he clicked his picture and loaded on Facebook. It is like one thief blaming the other.

If one wanted Policemen to wear helmets, what good will happen in life? Will our country become safe? I think Govt should exempt policemen from wearing helmets, because of the nature of their duty. Often they have to chase criminals all of a sudden, rush to places, and hence they can't carry helmets all the time with them. Helmets also get stolen if left with their bikes. So Govt should exempt them from this. After all govt has exempt our women and it is not considered invitation to die.

My objection is that this particular case is not where some great law abiding citizen had started this initiative. If this was a campaign, one could file a PIL. This is a case of sour-grapes where a guy got caught violating traffic rule and hence started blaming an innocent guy. It is like a guy got caught without ticket in a train and then he goes on asking the TTE to catch all other guys without tickets also. The request is fine and not wrong, but the motive is not noble. Motive is to hide his own frustration and direct it back at the enforcement agencies. I am essentially challenging the integrity of the guy who made this policeman Dinesh a scapegoat.

For the picture shared on Facebook; it was an accusation on Dinesh. But wonder why the guy hid the fact that he was held up for not wearing a seat belt and he saw Dinesh passing by? Why does he hide the fact that he was first held up for seat belt violation and Dinesh was just passing by and he chose to make Dinesh a scapegoat and himself into a celebrity?

रेड लाइट पर खड़े एक कार चालक को बिना सील्ट बेल्ट कार चलाने के आरोप में वहां खड़े ट्रैफिक पुलिसकर्मी ने रुकवाया था। इसी दौरान कॉन्स्टेबल दिनेश बिना हेलमेट बाइक चलाता हुआ वहां आया। इस पर कार चालक ने कहा कि बाइक सवार पुलिसकर्मी का पहले चालान काटो , फिर मेरा चालान काटना। शुक्रवार को कार चालक और पुलिसकर्मियों को बुलाया गया था। कार चालक नहीं आए , लेकिन कॉन्स्टेबल दिनेश को लिखित नोटिस देकर भविष्य में ऐसा दोबारा न ऐसा न करने की हिदायत दी गई। ट्रैफिक नियम तोड़ने के आरोप में उसे लाइन हाजिर कर दिया गया।

It says the man did not even bothered to go to the police station as reported in the news. But the Police worried about its image, punished Dinesh.

Watching Birds

There is a young and tall tree a few meters away from our bedroom's window. Some weeks ago a crow couple made their nest on its branches exactly parallel to our window. The father and the mother were both busy all the time taking care of their three kids. We used to wake up in the morning to find them checking-in and checking-out alternately to get food. The small kids would just open their red mouths and remain like that for ever - perhaps not knowing how and when the next piece of meal would drop into their mouth :) When we went to bed, we could hear and feel the family. On some days wind blew and the nest would shake with the branches; making us worried. Once it rained and the family weathered it all united as one team. A few days ago, we saw the parents teaching their frightened kids how to fly. Kiddo had gotten down on the tree a bit but was not finding courage to fly... And this morning one of their kids flew directly into our kitchen through an open window and landed up on our refrigerator :) Its parents were just outside but they obviously did not come in to help; humans are not to be trusted ever. We drove the kid out of the window but not before it broke an old cup of glass. As of now they have not returned to their nest after their flying session and I am waiting :)

Thrown out of the heaven?

Someone wrote: "Theory of heavens: If I am here I should be dead in Heaven (or hell , whatever). So what did they say to me, In the lines people say here about my deeds “if I do this I will go to heaven or hell”…"

  

I have read that humans are of highest in hierarchy on earth. After that some souls can attain the status of the Devas. Even Devatas can fall if they can’t maintain their Tapas (spiritual powers). We have examples of Apsaras being thrown out of Swarga; Indras being dethroned because of wrongdoings; even goddess Ganga came on earth from Brahmaloka. Nothing else is permanent except Paramatman and attaining Moksha. So I think according to the law of Karma it is perfectly fine to say that one would be thrown out of the heaven and would land up on earth if one’s conduct is not right.

Should Public Bus Services also run for Private Companies

Our company provides pickup and drop buses employees to the workplace and the service is contracted to multiple service providers. All of te bus service providers are private except one which is state owned (run by local municipal corporation). The govt owned service provider has a set of buses and staff which runs for our need. A colleague objected to it saying this is same as using public transport for personal use and if we did not use it then the buses would be for general public and hence would be more much more use for society.
 

I thought my colleague’s understanding was not correct. We are not using public buses for private use. We are using buses contracted by the public bus service provider for us and we are paying them their charges which includes all costs + the margin. In fact the profits they are earning by contracting some buses to companies like ours, they would be investing it in improving the quality of their service to the public also. They must be earning better margin here than the loss making routes and hence we are helping the often cash strapped public facilities provider with some business. Also, working with IT companies and competing with other private bus service providers, their employees and their organizations would be benefitting in more ways than one – most importantly being the work culture in a competitive environment (otherwise they are monopolistic and hence suffer from lack of accountability). 

What my friend understood is like saying that our company should never send any employee by trains, because every ticket we book could have been used by the general public. It is not the correct way to look at the scenario. 

In fact the govt owned public bus service operator is under huge financial crisis. It is losing money and is like a loss making concern. In such a scenario if it contracts a few buses and staff to serve IT companies on contract, it will only provide it with a regular and fixed source of income; which will improve its cash flow. The opertor will only benefit from such an arrangement. Also, I am sure our company won’t have invited it but it would have bid along with private operators to run operations here, so no blame can be on our company.
 

I think the wider question from his argument is: Should govt companies enter into fields where private operators are already running? I see many benefits of it. In such cases we should not see pieces of operations as exclusive services one at the cost of another. We should see whole of it. So if govt owned public bus service operator runs 10% of its fleet and staff on contract basis for IT companies and earns a regular income; it is not at the cost of public service. We know that no one stops it to buy more buses or hire more staff for public service. 

Similar to this debate is an old one: Should govt companies hire workers on contract? Each resource hired on the contract can be seen as coming at the cost of a full time employee who could earn pension and job security. But in such case we forget that even govt companies have a balance sheet which is evaluated at the end of every year. It is never “only give and no take” kind of affair. I do not see any harm in govt owned companies competing with private operators; just like govt owned public bus service operator is doing here.

Why Men Marry Younger Women?

I think the data used for the study is only from the USA, but the scenario is so similar to India. It indicates that this trend is a universal one and not specific to our country.

IT Returns through Govt website

For last 2 years I was filing income tax returns using Skorydov (myitreturn.com) and it would cost me Rs 199. I know that free filing through govt’s website was available. This time I used https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ for filing IT returns and found it very simple and free :) Even my last 2 years’ e-filing details were saved inside this portal. Highly recommended to you all (if you are not using already)!

Tips: Select the assessment year as 2013-14 if you are filing returns for financial year 2012-13 for the first time; using ITR-1 forum under Original filing category. Also select “Filed under section 139(1)” i.e. before due date. Take a print of ITR-V which we get after e-filing on website, and send to IT dept Bengaluru by normal or SpeedPost.
